How to choose solar panels: a beginner's guide

· By: SolarHero team

Panel types

There are three panel types on the market: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. For residential systems, monocrystalline panels are the best choice: higher efficiency, better performance in cloudy conditions.

Inverter selection

The inverter converts DC to AC power. Two main types:

  • String inverter: cheaper, simpler, ideal for smaller systems
  • Microinverter: one per panel, advantageous for roofs with shading

Sizing basics

System size is determined by monthly electricity consumption. General guidelines:

  • 300 kWh/month → ~3-4 kW system
  • 500 kWh/month → ~5-6 kW system
  • 800+ kWh/month → ~8-10 kW system

Use our solar calculator for precise sizing and savings estimates.

Which roof — which system?

  • Tile roof: universal, standard mounting
  • Metal/trapezoidal: fast installation, special clamps
  • Flat roof: frame-mounted solution, optimal angle
